hand. cannot. erase. up for pre-order

The pre-order is now up for the new Steven Wilson album "Hand. Cannot. Erase" And of course there will be a beautifully crafted special edition book which has been a great collaboration with Hajo, Carl and me. I think I took around 5000 pictures, analog + digital, and condensed it down to about 1500 final images, all very different from my previous work. This is really something special so get your hands on it while you can.

You can pre-order the deluxe version here and also in vinyl and the usual formats.

Here's the description that came with the original announcement :

"The new album from Steven Wilson, “Hand. Cannot. Erase.” is now available to pre-order in 4 different formats.

The album follows the critical and commercial success of 2013's 'The Raven That Refused To Sing' (Germany #3, UK# 28) and an international run of sold-out shows, including London's prestigious Royal Albert Hall.

Joining Steven on the album is Guthrie Govan (Official) (Official) (guitar), Adam Holzman (keyboards), Nick Beggs (bass / stick), and Marco Minnemann (drums) - all part of the world-class band that graced The Raven and the 2013/2014 world tours. (Theo Travis also appears on the album)

"Hand. Cannot. Erase." was recorded in September 2014 at the renowned AIR Studios in London."

And here's a few previews from the book edition.

Here's what he said about the announcement:

"I am please to announce that my solo piano CD, "The Deform Variations," will be released on March 2nd on the Burning Shed label.
This album is a collection of 27 solo piano improv-introductions for Steven Wilson's song "Deform To Form A Star," recorded all over the world on Steven's 'The Raven That Refused To Sing' tour in 2013. It is now available as a pre-order on the Burning Shed website. With a totally cool Lasse Hoile cover!"

a second piece has been added to the "behind the image" series

Today we are adding a second installment to the "Story Behind the Image" series for each of Lasse's art prints. In this series each available art print is evaluated regarding the setting, project background, and his ideas that went into the making of each image.

“Sleeping Figure”

“This image was made in 2010 as part of a series of nudes that is an on-going project. I’ve always wanted to do nude portraits but do them differently, even a book.

I’ve always been partial to photographing out in nature with emphasis on using the beauty of natural light. We all are moved by it every day, the ever-changing weather affects our moods. I really like this old tree. It’s something that was growing wildly, commanding, even daunting and provoking all those that approached it. I wanted to juxtapose the scene by placing a small creature at the base so it would be something that was growing wildly and something frail beneath.

The image evokes isolation and cold, perhaps the coldness of love. It was made during a particular period of my life and this image maybe reflected a relationship that was bittersweet on a sub-conscious level.

This image ended up being selected by Justin Broadrick (from Godflesh, Final and Jesu) as the cover for his Final project, “Apple Never Falls Far From the Tree.” It had this great connection to the ambient music and was the obvious choice for the album.

Prints can exclusively be ordered here

steven wilson's new album to be called "hand. cannot. erase."

Here's a little promo image I did of SW earlier this year while recording the new album.

With the announcement of the new album there is also a bunch of tour dates. Stay tuned for more goodies and updates very soon.

Here is what SW says about the news :

"I’m happy to announce that my new album “Hand. Cannot. Erase.” is now finished and will be released on Kscope in February. More news and previews soon, including information on how to pre-order a very special deluxe edition.

In the meantime the first tour dates in the UK and Europe are confirmed, see below. We are currently developing a show that I hope will raise the bar both musically and visually from previous tours, with a set list based around the new album, as well as casting the net further back into my songwriting past for a few surprises."

first part on ongoing series of "behind the image" from mailorderbabies site

"She is almost beyond human, a mythic creature that is forever the heroine in our vivid memory, yet we cannot quite remember her face..."

Today we begin a "Story Behind the Image" series for each of Lasse's art prints. We will be taking each available art print and asking questions about the setting, project background, and his ideas that went into the making of each image.

“Study of a Girl in Wolfskin”

“The story behind Soup’s ‘Beauty of Our Youth’ was based our past memories when we were young and full-spirited. Here was a beautiful girl from our past. She is almost beyond human, a mythic creature that is forever the heroine in our vivid memory, yet we cannot quite remember her face—that’s why her face is blurred.”

“We hiked for hours out in the wilderness just scouting for the perfect location when the light just became perfect. Norway’s landscape always emits a mysterious feel in the air so I knew it was the perfect backdrop. Hence, the mythological feel in the overall image unintentional comes through. It all just came together and we got the perfect shot.

“You have to use your imagination sometimes when you reminisce about the past and you should still embrace the wonders of youth just as you saw them back then.” -LH

news on the new blueneck album

The always great Blueneck have released a few teaser shots and a snippet of music from their upcoming album "King Nine"

From the bands description on the new album :

Hailing from North Somerset, UK post/prog-rock veterans BLUENECK have been at forefront of the European underground experimental scene since forming in 2000. They've released four critically-acclaimed albums; toured extensively across Europe with acts such as Cult of Luna and Mono; have soundtracked a number of independent films and had their work featured on NBC, HBO and SyFy channels; and are now mainstays of the European festival circuit (including a triumphant midnight set at Glastonbury 2014). However their most ambitious achievement – 3 years in the making – is new album KING NINE, released on Denovali Records in November.

Singer-songwriter Duncan Attwood's astonishingly affecting melancholy vocals have always been the chilly heart of Blueneck's music (2006's SCARS OF THE MIDWEST, 2009's THE FALLEN HOST, 2011's REPETITIONS), so fans were surprised when the band released the hushed, vocal-free soundtrack album EPILOGUE in 2012. However, work had begun by Attwood and fellow bandmembers Richard Sadler and Ben Paget on KING NINE in early 2011, in advance of the writing and recording of EPILOGUE. Continuing their ongoing relationship with Bristol UK producer/collaborator Mat Sampson, KING NINE has been a quiet labour of love – a deliberate, determined commitment to push Attwood's songcraft and singing to the fore. To make the most vibrant, accessible and exciting Blueneck record possible.

The band's three key musical influences go some way to explaining KING NINE's ambitious, expansive (but always accessible) scope: the electronica of Boards of Canada; the movie soundtracks of Ennio Morricone and John Carpenter; the melodicism and melancholia of Kid-A era Radiohead and Arcade Fire.

KING NINE's packaging arguably matches the ambition of the album itself. With new work from acclaimed artist and filmmaker Lasse Hoile (who previously worked with Porcupine Tree, Anathema and Opeth), KING NINE features unnerving scenes of Southern Gothic solitude from America's deep south, reminiscent of (oc)cult detective TV show ‘True Detective'.

Praise for Blueneck:

“Stunning” – Rock Sound
“Fantastic… An intoxicating all-consuming experience” – Classic Rock: Prog
“Beautiful… Creepy” - Vice
“Melds heavy alt-rock with gentle Amnesiac-era Radiohead fragility in impressive style” – Metal Hammer
“One of England's best kept secrets” – The Digital Fix
